Christmas head gear competition and Technology day

We had a huge amount of entries for the competition on Friday with a hard job for the judges! There was an incredible standard across all classes with some extremely creative and inventive designs. As we told the children, every entry was a winner as standard was so high. A big well done to the children and parents for such fun, engaging competition entries.

The children had a wonderful day on Christmas Technology day. The atmosphere was very Christmassy with staff in Christmas jumpers. Every classroom and team reported a wonderful day, children behaving impeccably, super craft items created too and a few sweeties along the way! Again, a huge thank you for those parents who came along to lend a hand.

POW Musicians Christmas performance...

On Monday 9th December children who are currently learning instruments in school are going to be performing to the rest of the school and their parents (letters have been sent out). The assembly will begin at 10am and will last approximately 45 minutes. The whole school will also be attending this assembly.
It is a lovely occasion to see all our school musicians perform and also gives them an experience of performing in front of an audience.
If your child has been having lessons outside of school and they would like to participate too then PLEASE let me know!

Mrs Mewett

Xmas DT competition!

A ‘Design your own Christmas novelty head gear’ competition has been set up throughout the school for all the children to tackle if they so wish, the deadline being Friday 13th December (the Christmas Technology Day).

The ‘head piece’ will need to be:

·         able to be worn!

·         have a festive flavour to it

·         display interesting design elements about it

The children have been told that parents are allowed to help them create the head piece but it must be obvious to the eye that they have been involved too!

We will hold a parade in the school hall during assembly time, each child who participates will be able to wear their head pieces and explain to the judges what is special about their design. We anticipate choosing a winner per class if plenty of entries.

Finally, if you do need any card then please see Mrs Webb in Year 2 who may be able to help?

 Happy making!    Mrs Mewett

Hope you all enjoyed the event on  Friday evening! Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to organise it and to everyone who volunteered to help in some way!
This year is the school's 20th year so I hope we can organise a really super party sometime in the summer term 2014. Any creative and innovative ideas are welcome!

Parent View

Can I please encourage parents to give us your opinions about the school through Ofsted's Parent View?

This is available via the hyperlink on the school's home page of the website. Click it to proceed to register, when you will be sent a password to your email address so you can log in and answer 12 questions about the school.

Parent View is not intended to replace the annual paper questionnaire we send home each March /April.

Parents' evenings

Thank you to everyone who attended our parent teacher consultation evenings this week.  Please remember that if you were unable to make either of the evenings, to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet your child's classteacher.

Apologies if anyone had to wait a while for your appointment. I am sure you understand that keeping to 10 or 15 minutes per child is difficult for the teachers!

Bling a Bike!

We would like to thank you all for the marvellous response to "Bling a Bike" day. There were 65 bicycles and 35 scooters that were colourfully decorated at our parade during the school assembly which was a bright and spectacular occasion.

Our Sustrans Bicycle Officer, Jonathon Dixon, was most impressed by all of the wonderful "blinging" and was very complimentary about the effort that had been put in by children and parents. There were a selection of children who received prizes for their work, though I must say it was very difficult to select winners from so many fantastic entries.

We will let you know about our next "Sustrans Bike It" event.

In the meantime, why not consider walking, scootering or cycling to school on a regular basis!

Some ideas to help you with Bling a Bike Day!

Bling your Bike Ideas

All ideas below were collected from various Bike It officers, which hopefully will give you a few ideas to get started with!

The possibilities are endless, but it’s also important to make sure the decorations don’t obstruct the controls of the bike.

§         Search for ‘scraper bike’ online and look at the images for some great wheel decoration ideas
§         Lots of pipe cleaners and ribbons for weaving between spokes and around frame (of course making sure not to get in the way of any moving parts)
§         Plastic drinking straws. Split up the side and put on the spokes (this was very popular and looked very effective with bright colours)
§         Stickers. All sorts for putting on helmets and vinyl stickers for placing on the bike frame.
§         Tinsel and feather boas. Attach with cable ties and cut the ends short so it won’t come undone too easily.
§         Lengths of fabric cut into long strips and weaved in between spokes and around the frame.
§         Cardboard cut outs with one placed each side of the bike and attached with cable ties. Obviously this needs consideration so as to avoid clogging up moving parts and so on.
§         Print outs of popular cartoons and bike images, laminate and cut out, punch holes and then cable tie or use pipe cleaners to tie onto spokes and frame. Also really good if you can use a laminator on the day and laminate the pictures drawn by the children to attach to their own bike.
§         Flags! Bunting with lots of different flags to cut off and use or get children to create their own flags. Can be attached anywhere, but it looks good if attached to a thin piece of bamboo so it can be attached to the back of the bike and wave in the air as they cycle.
§         Use modelling clay. Makes great dust caps.

Bling a bike day!

“Bling a Bike Day”
Yes that is “Bling”, although we would like you to “Bring” your bikes too!
On Tuesday 15th October we will be holding an event to promote “Being Safe by Being Seen” when out on your bikes and scooters. We will have a competition to see who can make their bike or scooter extra colourful and bright,- so that it really stands out!
The children may score extra marks for having bright, colourful clothing that they can put on when parading their “blinged”-bike.
Children who would like to take part in the competition should bring their bikes or scooters to school on the morning of Tuesday 15th October. We will be asking Jonathon Dixon, our local Sustrans Bike Officer, to judge the competition. Winners will be decided during our school assembly at 10.10 am.
It is important that any materials added to your bike or scooter should not be in the way of moving parts, and that your bike or scooter can still be wheeled along in the parade without any difficulty.

Whoops!

Whoops! Green IT cloud

Whoops, when we did the planning for the activities for After School Club we forgot about half term!!! Therefore the activities planned for the 28th October will take place in the week beginning 21st October. Those activities planned for the 21st will take place at a later date.  Hope this does not create too much confusion!
We hope that the children who have attended so far have enjoyed the activities and we look forward to seeing you again.

Once again sorry for the confusion.

POWSA Social

Hi there guys,
Just to let you know that the next POWSA meeting is being held on the 9th July at 19:45 at the new Wagamama restaurant in Brewery square. New faces are always welcome.  We are a small group of committed parents and teachers who enjoy raising money for our school and children, and without all your help and support this just wouldn't happen.  However, our core group is getting smaller and smaller and as a consequence recent events have been much harder to organise and run.  Therefore we would ask you to seriously consider coming along to the next meeting, ask your questions, find out what its all about and see if becoming a POWSA member is something you would like to do.  There is no expectation on your time, we won't sign you up to do anything, we just ask you come along, meet us and enjoy a nice meal.  If you do fancy coming would you be kind enough to let a POWSA member know, or leave your name with the school office, just so we can ensure a big enough table.
Hope to see you there!

Musical Soiree

Musical Soiree
This is a short reminder of our Musical Soiree taking place on Tuesday
25th June at 6.00pm at the Dorchester Middle School.

We moved the venue as we have exceeded our school’s capacity! Please also
recall that the performance is not suitable for small children to attend.
Finally, I am assuming that all children are taking part unless you have
informed the office or me?!  If your child would like to be involved and has lessons outside of school then please also see me!
As this is the sole concert of the year
expectations are that all children learning music at the school would
endeavour to be there. Thank you! Mrs Mewett

POW Netball Tournament

POW Netball Tournament
18/05/13
On Saturday, the school was full of buzz and excitement with lots of different stalls and activities set up. There were also several children dressed in their PE kit ready for the netball and football tournaments that were about to take place. We welcomed netball teams from Piddle Valley, Milborne, Puddletown and Winterborne schools and all began warming up ready for the first match.
There was some fantastic netball being played by all teams and the tournament was well underway.
Group A winners were Prince of Wales after a fantastic attacking team effort in their last match putting them through to the final on goal difference.
Group B winners were Piddle Valley 1 with a brilliant use of the bounce pass into the D to create several goal scoring opportunities.
THE FINAL
POW vs PV1
In the tense final, with many team mates and parents cheering on the side lines, both teams played brilliantly. Piddle Valley's speed of passing and movement began to tip the scoreline in their favour before half time. In the final half Prince of Wales did well to get some goals back. But the clock had run out... Piddle Valley won 8-3. Mr Farrington presented the winners with the POW trophy and congratulated all the children for taking part in some excellent netball.
Thank you to all who watched and cheered the teams along and to all the competing schools. A big thank you to Miss Roberts for organising the fantastic event with the most teams ever competing at the POW summer netball tournament.

Year 4 triumph at swimming gala!

Our team of Year 4 swimmers did brilliantly in the West Dorset swimming gala, coming second out of 14 schools! Well done to all the swimmers and to their coach Mrs Smith. It just shows how regular practice and  lots of effort produce fantastic results!

Generosity

Our assembly theme is Generosity and today Mr Farrington told the story of Rainbow Fish who opted to be generous and found friendship!

Parent/Staff Book Share

Good News.....the Parent/Staff Book Share is now in place and is ready for anyone who wants to start
borrowing books. Please come and have look. Anyone who would still like to donate books please bring them into school. Many thanks, Mrs Dukes.

Irish music in the air!

The Prince of Wales school and Pre-school were treated to some wonderful live music on Friday 10th May in the school hall. Claire and Matt Tarling entertained the school with samples of reels and polkas which had us all moving and clapping along! Children also learnt about how this music is performed and the names of the instruments which are used in Irish music. I think we all learnt something new!

Friday, 10 May 2013

Questionnaires

The results of the recent parent and pupil questionnaires are now in our new display board. One of our governors will be following up with some more detailed discussions with some children about their views about their learning. If you haven't already done so, please try to find a few moments to complete Ofsted's online survey through the Parentview link on our website.

POWSA Summer Fair

POWSA's main annual fund raising event is the summer fair. This will be held on Saturday 18th May from 11.00 to 2.00. The  more parents and children who attend the more money is raised for new school equipment! We also depend upon volunteers to run stalls and other activities. We are aware that there is a clash this year with the open morning at Dorchester Middle School but hope that families can come along afterwards!

Assembly theme: Generosity

When Jesus fed the 5000 with five loaves and seven fishes was it a miracle or an example of human generosity? That was the question posed by Mr Farrington this week in his assembly.

Musical Soiree Date

The Prince of Wales Musical Soiree will take place at Dorchester Middle School on Tuesday 25th June, to begin at 6pm. A letter will be coming home tonight with children who are involved in music within the school. If your child does not come home with a letter please come to the office or see me.
Thank you,

Mrs Mewett

School Music Soiree

On Friday 10th May a letter will be sent out to all children who learn instruments or who partake in music sessions within The Prince of Wales School to come and perform at the Summer Soiree 2013! We endeavour to involve all children whether beginner or an advanced player. The choir will also perform as well as recorder groups. Please fill out the slip accordingly and return to the school office asap.
If your child has music lessons outside of school but would also like to perform then please drop by and speak to me, we'll endeavour to involve all who wish to perform!
Orchestra  - the children are doing really well with rehearsing the two songs. With six sessions left before the school concert it is important that all children make rehearsals as the premise is to get all playing well with each other!
Choir - again, six sessions to go before our big performance! The sunny lunchtimes are tempting children not to attend. Please talk to your child about 'sticking to attending'. We are trying to give the children some time after choir to go outside too. We do keep a register, so please see me if any queries?
Finally the summer term is the culmination of music practice. So if your child is showing an interest in beginning an instrument then please inform either the school office or myself and we'll place their names on lists for September. We are going to have some spaces when Yr 4 leave in brass, violin, piano and singing.
