Hanukkah

Today the children learnt about another religious festival of light, the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. We played the game of dreidel, listened to the story behind the eight day festival and shared some potato latkes that Mr Farrington had cooked. Although there weren't quite enough to go round, the children decided they were very tasty and might want to cook some of their own at home.

THS school DASP Music Concert

Many, many thanks to all those parents who came along last night and supported their children taking part in it. It was a great experience for all, watching the THS orchestra, hearing instruments being played like clarinets, the list goes on! A lot of POW children appeared in groups such as the First Schools orchestra, the DASP recorder group. Mr Gibson and I were very proud of all the children, lastly our children sang their hearts out with other DASP children to 'Midnight'.

A super night, well done!

DT competition - WOW!

We were so impressed by the effort of all entries last week in the 'create a Christmas decoration for a tree'.

It was truly impossible to select winners from each class as so many impressed us and made us smile for such innovation in using recycled items!

Well done to the winners though, we hope you are enjoying your book?

We look forward to seeing you all next week!

Walking into Narnia

The children's recycled Christmas tree decorations looked so fantastic when we were judging them this morning! We gave out the prizes (incredibly difficult to choose) and decided to display the children's efforts down the school corridor. It looks like the route into Narnia from the wardrobe!

Please find time to admire the amazing creativity on display!

Some people pray in one way, some in another, some don't pray at all....

Today Mr Farrington showed the children some objects used by people from different faiths to help them to pray. We talked about the different places of worship that exist in the UK, including a mosque and a mandir in Bolton where Mr Farrington grew up.  We saw lots of photos of children and adults praying. We also agreed that not everyone prays, and that everyone has a responsibility to respect other people's beliefs.

Musicianship skills required for our Carols at end of term!

For the last couple of year now we have a strong, super team of 'grown ups!' who have pitched up with their instruments on Friday 19th December to play along with some simple Christmas carols whilst the school and parents sing along! The live music really does help bring the feeling of Christmas and community side by side!

If you are able to help reignite this group again/ add to this group then PLEASE let me know your willingness either via email c.mewett@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk or via the school office! Beginners welcome, or rusty players like myself, it is actually a cathartic experience!!

CHOIR notice...

We have two concerts which we are signed up for us this Christmas! The first is on Tuesday 16th December at THS, children need to be there by 5.30pm, the evening will consist of groups within DASP coming together. I have issued letters for this so if your child would like to do it then please come along! You will need to contact DASP Music office ASAP to get a ticket though, I hear they are going very quickly!
Secondly, the last day of term, Friday 19th December, the school joins together to sing carols in the school hall from just before 3pm. The choir will be singing three songs to the whole school, again, please come along to support them!
Any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

PC's for Parents

Dear Parents,

Due to a network upgrade recently, we now have 4 computers which we are unable to use in school. They are good sound computers with some life left in them yet. They have Windows XP installed but you would need to install a copy of Microsoft office for WORD.

I have the complete specification if you'd like to talk with me or email me about the machines.

As the school is constantly having to update and increase its ICT tools then a 'donation' to our ICT budget would be greatly appreciated. I am about Monday to Thursday in school time; otherwise please email me on b.dukes@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Many thanks.

Eco Code

Mr MacBean and his Eco Team led assembly on Tuesday. They have been creating an Eco Code and this was shared with all the school. It is attached to this Blog: you might like to see how much applies to the children at home!

 Prince of Wales School Eco-Code
We will not turn on the lights unless it is necessary and we will turn off the lights when we leave the room.
We will make sure we turn off the taps when we have finished washing our hands and we will use the toilets sensibly.
We will make sure we put all organic waste into the compost bins.
We will put paper in the paper-recycling bins.
We will recycle plastic and cardboard.
We will walk or cycle to school if it is possible for us to do so and if our parents are happy for us to do so.
We will try to eat all of our dinner.
We will only bring “healthy snacks” to school.
We will look after all of the wildlife (plants and animals) that share the school grounds with us.
We all have a responsibility to learn about the lives of people from other parts of the World. We must respect them and to try to support them charitably if we can in times of hardship. They are all our neighbours.

Royal Visit

The visit of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales went extremely well, thanks particularly to the excellent way in which the children entertained and informed him about the school. It was lovely to hear his words of thanks and encouragement to all the staff as well! There are photos and a video of the visit via The Dorset Echo website and we shall be making public some of our photos taken on the day.

Handwriting blitz!

We are starting a project to focus on improving all our children's handwriting. This will be linked with the age and current ability of each child and will give each child targets for improvement. Parents can help at home by asking children to practise! Check your child's class blog for details!

Children's Voice

The Children's Voice have been helping us by giving us their opinions about the way that teachers mark their work and give children feedback about what they have done well and what they need to do to improve. These views will be really helpful to all the teaching staff. Thank you Children's Voice!

Eco Team

Mr MacBean's Eco Team have been busy developing an Eco Code and an action plan to guide our journey towards achieving Green Flag status. The Eco Code will soon be on display around the school.

Everyone is different! Everyone is unique!

Mrs Thorpe led another Jigsaw assembly this morning. She introduced this half term's theme which is all about recognising that everyone is special and we all should be celebrating that we are all different!

Parent View

Mr Farrington will be available during this week's parent consultation evenings. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to pop along to see him. He will also be encouraging parents to provide your views about the school through Ofsted's Parent View website to ensure that this reflects an up to date picture of parental opinions. If you haven't done this before, he will be in the ICT suite to show you the simple steps you need to follow. If you have done this before, then please consider submitting your views again!

How aware are you about keeping your child safe online?

During one of the parent consultation evenings, we are welcoming representatives from Dorset Police Safer Communities Team. They will be available to answer questions and provide information about how to keep your child safe when using the internet at home. The image attached to this blog shows you the way we teach about esafety at school.

Our friend Jon Dixon

Jon Dixon from Sustrans will be around during Wednesday's parent consultation evening. He will be giving advice and safety tips about your child's bicycle.
