A gift of Hope

Mr Farrington told the children this week about our old library books. These have now been shipped to a school in Uganda and a school in Kenya. The children saw pictures of their old books on a shelf in a classroom. We talked about how these books represent HOPE for the future.

POWSA AGM Thursday 23rd October 7.45pm

We know AGMs are not terribly exciting but POWSA does fantastic work raising funds for the school and developing our sense of community. We need new ideas and new faces and new enthusiasm to join our friendly committee of committed parents. We welcome especially parents of new Reception children. Our AGM is on Thursday 23rd October in the staffroom at 7.45pm. Please come along, meet new friends, help the school!

Eco Schools update

Today Mr MacBean has lead a school assembly talking about how our individual actions can make a difference to "A Greener Future". Every child will be bringing home a little booklet entitled "Picture a Greener Future" which we would encourage all parents to share with their child. See if you can come up with some energy saving strategies that will not only save you money but also have an impact on Planet Earth! Children might want to bring Mr MacBean some work or pictures showing what they plan to do!

Jigsaw!

The school is now using a resource called Jigsaw to plan our lessons to develop children's Personal, Social, Health and Emotional development.
Each class will have a weekly Jigsaw lesson. Each half term the Jigsaw puzzle will be introduced in a whole school assembly. This week Mrs Thorpe has done this talking about our Rights and Responsibilities and the importance of our Class Charters. She also talked about thinking about the consequences of our actions by using some Squirty Cream!
We plan to keep you informed about Jigsaw each half term as we move through the programme.

Eco Schools: Litter

This year Duncan MacBean is leading a project to improve our children's awareness of all aspects of looking after our world. This is called Eco Schools and will involve working with other local schools and officers from Dorset. We will keep you posted about our progress. If any parents are particularly interested in this, please make yourself known to Duncan to see how you can help.

One of the areas of Eco Schools is raising awareness of the negative aspects of Litter. Last week Duncan led a fun filled assembly getting across the message about the pollution caused by Litter.

Friendship

Our current theme in our assemblies is FRIENDSHIP. We have used the words of James Taylor's "You've Got A Friend" and two Beatles classics "When I'm 64" and "With A Little Help From My Friends," to ask the children to think about what makes a good friend. We have also told a story from Judaism about the friendship of David and Jonathan.

Library Summer Reading Challenge - Hurry!!!!!

Well, I hope you all had a wonderful, fulfilled and relaxing holiday - hopefully finding time to indulge yourselves getting lost in a good book - or 5!?

With that in mind, I must remind all of you that you still have time to complete the library summer reading challenge! The closing date is this Saturday 6th September, take your sticker sheet in to the library, having read 6 books, and you will receive your medal. The certificates will be sent to school so that we have the pleasure of presenting them - it's always really exciting to see how many of you succeeded in completing the challenge. I have my fingers crossed, hoping that we have even more than last year!!!!!!!!

I have set the new Year 4 Library monitors the challenge of creating some reading/library competitions throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Keep enjoying the school library and if you have any ideas, suggestions or comments to make then I will really welcome them, so please call round to the Year 4 classroom to see me!

Here's to a great year on a magic carpet ride soaring through super books and firing our imaginations!
